Box with crosshairs - what is it?

I've noticed on both of the phones that I have had with Verizon that
there is a square with crosshairs in the middle of it that appears on
the display. On my Nokia 3589i it is right next to the 1x symbol.
Does anyone know what this is and/or what it means?

    Thanks!

I'll take a guess. I have a *circle* with crosshairs. Its for GPS
(Global Positioning System). If I turn it off in the preferences
there is no icon. If I select "911" it gives me a circle with
crosshairs (means that it is activated only when dialing 911).
If I select "location on" it gives a couple of "sound waves"
(like next to a speaker icon) next to it. Means that its
    activated all the time.

Note that most/all the current phones are GPS capable.
As I understand it not much has been done to implement
    it on the other end.

oops, I lied. I only have 2 options: "911" or "location on"
and can select one or the other.
