e815: battery level indicator always at "full"

Is this a bug--to be fixed by s/w update--or a defect in my specific phone?
The battery level indicator always shows charge is full when the phone is
running on battery; only when I plug in the charger cord does the indicator
show the true, less-than-full charge level.

I have the E815. The bars don't go down like indicators on other phones.
The bars change color from a dark green to a light green, then yellow and
    finally red.

When you charge it you see 1 bar, 2 bars and finally 3 bars -- all blinking
    during charge.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're asking.

If yours shows all dark green all the time till it dies, then that may be
your phone. My doesn't behave that way.

This may be a really stupid question, but how do you know
the battery isn't full, or close to full?

Have you run the phone down to the point when it gives off the "Low Battery"
warning, and STILL find a full indicator?

Hint: My experience with a few Motorolas is that when you
connect the charger, the battery gauge shows one less bar than the actual
charge level---that is, if you connect it and it shows two-out-of-three
bars, it's full or near full. If it shows 1/3, your battery is about 2/3
charged. The indicator only shows all the bars when the battery is 100% full
    and no longer charging.

Of course this isn't true when the battery is completely dead, the gauge
will then show no bars (accurate) for a time as it charges.

I don't know how familiar you are with these modern batteries, but I've been
shocked to pull a phone out of the drawer after 4-6 months and find a
near-full battery. I use a rechargeable MagLite flashlight at work, and
those Ni-Cads are junk as far as shelf life. A week in the closet----deader
    than a doornail.

    That's my experience only. HTH.

OK. Now I feel reeeeaally stupid.

I'm used to a much shorter battery life from my old phone, so I apparently
just haven't run this one down enough to cause the yellow/red to display. I
had expected to see the tradition battery display (bars going down as power
fades), so when they didn't--but did so when I plugged in the charger--I
assumed that the indicator simply wasn't working. Thanks for the education.
Who'd have thunk you'd need to consult the manual to read the battery level
    indicator...........

You can also press the voice command button and say "check battery" or
    "check status."

That's due to the lithium-ion type batteries that are used in modern phones.
They hold a charge MUCH MUCH better than earlier nicad or nimh batteries..

Or (on the E815) you can hit the voice dial button and say 'check status'
and it'll read to you the relative signal strength, battery level, and
    service mode..
