My Blackberry works great - best phone I ever had -
Works anywhere compared to other substandard carriers and fruit phones.
    Never had one dropped call.
    Does anything I want.
Suprisingly good email/audio playback/camera/browser/battery life etc.

    Great tax deduction.

    Skype out - any phone number US/Canada/AK/HI/PF - $24/year
Skype in - each phone number anywhere Skype has numbers, not just in
your town, $28 each up to 10. I have two, Charleston SC and London, UK.

My total cost with two phone numbers in two countries and 60,000 minutes
    per month outgoing = 24 + 28 + 28 = $80/YEAR.

    Let's compare phone bills......

My phones: Two Nokia N800 Linux tablets
One Netgear SPH101 wifi Skype Phone
One Linksys CIT200 wireless to USB on main WinXP box.
Skype forwards to my sellphone if anyone calls and I don't answer,
leaving message on my sellphone answering box if I don't answer at all.

See the thread on alt.cellular.attws of someone who is in Mexico and
Skype is the ONLY internet phone his hotel can't block because it uses
any port...even port 80 if it comes to that.

    How much is Magicjack??

what have YOU been smoking? I have had magicjack for about 8 months now, and
only paid ONCE when I got it (29.95) for the entire first YEAR (no monthly
charge)... so in answer to your loaded question, of how much after 30 days,
zero, free, none, zilch, zip, nada... how much does skype charge (more or
    less than free)?

oh, and it works with my nokia tablet too......

I found it. Good ol' YouTube. It's hard to hide from YouTube.

I watched a few videos and I can see, if it works at your house, where
    it would bust Vonage's chops.

Will it work on a laptop on free wifi at IHOP or some other restaurant?
What happens when it encounters another computer, like unplugging it
from the house desktop and plugging it into your laptop at Starbucks?
Can you use it there? Many respondents say it eats quite a bit of
bandwidth, higher than Skype's 110Kbps, which should make it an issue
    over sellphone data circuits.

How do you get it to work on the Linux tablet. I have the port
converter to put it in host mode, but is there a Linux driver/dialer for
    it?

The price makes it interesting, but several reviewers say this guy is a
home business so no telling how long it'll work before his bills come
due. I see no mention of 256-bit encryption to keep the snoopers out of
my phonecons, a serious issue these days. It'd be great for the kids,
if you can talk them out of their sellphones with SMS.

I heard several videos talk about "there are more area codes every
month". Does that mean the local number near you or won't it dial all
area codes across the US and Canada? They never said what they meant.

Most interesting, but it's no Skype. 70% of my calls are from Skype-to-
Skype across the planet with color video, texting URLs/etc., and
swapping files between us. I really don't need to pay for Skype at all
for most of my usage, but feel I must contribute to support their
efforts. Sure is lots of Skype on military laptops across Iraq and
Afghanistan. The service people like it because they can't be
"monitored" by their own military snoops because of the 256-bit
encryption on the audio circuit to Mama back home.

I like to think I can still make a private call, Skype-to-Skype, without
Big Brother recording my every word.....

    Down, Boy! Down!! Chill out!

It's only a VoIP phone! You can't do video, file transfers, text

The main advantage to Skype is that it doesn't tie you a stupid USB dongle-
it's a purely software solution and can run concurrently, with the same
account on multiple devices- PCs, PDAs, tablets, cellular phones, etc.
MagicJack could be a purely software solution as well, but they want people
to believe the "Magic" is in the cheesy USB-to-RJ11 device, and not the
rebranded SJPhone software the system uses.

Even more annoying (to me) is that MJ is a stardard SIP-compliant provider,
but they lock down the software and hide your credentials so you can't use
standard SIP hardware (Analog Telephone Adapters) which would allow you to
use MJ without a PC running.

MagicJack is $20/year for unlimited in/out. The first year is included
    with the $40 hardware dongle.

$20/year is a pretty unsustainable price given the costs involved, so I
suspect their business model is a Ponzi scheme- sales to new customers pays
the cost of operations. I suspect they'll collapse like a house of cards
when the new customers run out.

They even offer 5 years for $59 which smacks a little of desperation.
