With the flip closed, the mic is covered up. It may work fine on your
end, but the people you call won't be able to hear you very well, if
they can hear you at all.

My experience is just the opposite. In fact, I just tried it myself to
verify each end of the conversation.

I set the VX4500 up for auto-answer/driving mode and had the kids call
me from an upstairs phone. I could hear them just fine over the closed
    phone.

I then sent them downstairs to my office/VX4500 while I went upstairs
and called. I could hear them perfectly well over the closed phone.

Perhaps it helps that I have the leather case and that provides more
space for the mic to pick up my voice.
