If you buy a phone on ebay, and it craps out. How do you get service?

    TIA

Will Verizon sell you the insurance?

If it's a phone that's currently carried by VZW (or recently discontinued)
take it to them for replacement. I've never been asked where I got my
phone. Since most phones aren't sold by VZW for more than a year, many
current ones are still under their warranty period.

If it's an older one, tough. You'll have to buy another one.

Yes, I *think* insurance is an option. I believe that lockline or
    Asurion(sp?)
will cover your phone for the 3.99/4.99 per month if it is a working phone
activated on a VZW plan. They will call you to verify if the phone is
    working.

**side note: How do they know you are using the phone that is being insured?
My guess is that they have access to VZW information and can verify the
    phone
in use at the time. In the same way that your phone is displayed on your
    VZW
    "my account" page.

This is not "service" as such but could replace your phone with a $50
    deductible.

**side note #2: I believe this is the main difference between the "total
    coverage"
for 4.99 and the other coverage for 3.99. The total coverage will replace a
    phone
that is out of warrantee (or still in) for a manufacturer defect. The 3.99
    only covers
for loss or damage. If it simply quits working the 3.99 doesn't cover it.
We're speaking technically legal here. "Heh, if it quits working, simply
    throw
it on the pavement" is not the issue here.
