How much do you pay for tax?

Since tax is a big trunk of what we pay for services. I'd like to
know how much the $29.99 plans from ATTWS, Cingular, Verizon,
T-Mobile, Sprint PCS and NexTel cost with taxes included, assuming no
extra minutes are used (Some of these might not have a $29.99 plan).
I'm in New York City of location matters.

The taxes should all be the same, if identical service and usage is used on
each carrier. Where they screw you is in the "Fees and Surcharges"- these
are not government mandated (as the names might imply), but more like cost
recovery fees, and they vary greatly by carrier. A big topic for wireless
carriers, but I was just looking at my landline bill today- Qwest charges
almost $8.00/month for these various fees. Nextel charges me $7.16/month,
but that includes actual taxes (I'm looking at the online bill, which
    doesn't include the breakdown).

My data for 3 different plans is below. Note the different ways each
carrier refers to the taxes and fees. I'm consolidating everything to
Verizon when the AT&T and Cingular contracts are up in June. Verizon
coverage beats the other 2 hands down. I've been all over the east coast
and west coast with similar results. Just wish Verizon had phones with more
features like you can get with GSM carriers!

On my daughter's $39.99 Cingular plan: (TDMA - better coverage than the AT&T
GSM plan)(based on a Total bill of $48.64 with Taxes, fees, etc)
    1.00 911 Service Fee
    1.00 Federal Universal Service Fee
    0.32 Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee
    1.24 Federal Excise Tax
    3.06 State Sales Tax
    2.09 State Gross Receipts Surcharge
    -----
    8.71

On my wife's AT&T $29.99 Plan (GSM - has the worst coverage of all the plans
we have)(based on a Total bill of $38.57 with Taxes, fees, etc)
    2.39 Sales Tax
    1.66 General Excise Tax
    0.78 Universal Connectivity Charge
    1.00 911 Surcharge
    1.00 Federal Tax
    -----
    6.83

My Verizon $39.95 AC Plan (best coverage of all plans we have) (based on a
Total bill of $67.39 with Taxes, fees, etc)
    2.67 Gross Receipts Surcharge
    0.74 Federal Universal Service Charge
    0.45 Regulatory Charge
    1.00 RI State 911 Surcharge
    1.48 Federal Tax
    3.92 State Sales Tax
    -----
    10.26

Well, I tried to use "Slick WIlly" 's information for a table, but the
numbers didn't add up. Rather than worry about their match, this will give
you an idea. But: Cingular 22%, ATT 23%, and strangly Verizon 26%
    Cing ATT Verizon
    39.99 29.99 39.95
    48.64 36.82 50.21

    911 Service Fee(Surcharge) 1.00 1.00 1.00
Federal Univesal Service Fee 1.00 0.74
Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee 0.32 0.45
    Federal Excise Tax 1.24 1.00 1.48
    State Sales Tax 3.06 2.39 3.92
State Gross Recipts Surrharge 2.09 2.67
    General Excise Tax 1.66
    Universal Connectivity Charge 0.78

    Total Tax n fees n surcharges 8.71 6.83 10.26
    Tax n fees as % of base plan 22% 23% 26%

The Dr. (My experience is that Veizon used to be around 18%, now I "rule of
    thumb" at 22%)

Depends what state you have your contract in. I have mine in a state that
has no state sales tax, and the numbers and %'s are way different when you
    knock off sales tax.

Dr. - the reason it doesn't ratio correctly is the Verizon bill has some
prorated partial month stuff to synchronize the period with my landline
bill. I signed up for OneBill. When I get a chance, I'll pull out the bill
and see if I can extract the full month portion of the bill and update the
    post.

As an aside to this whole topic, it appears that some pressure may be back
on the telcos to roll the 'fees' into the service charges:
