I switched from AT&T to Verizon. My 2 cents...

    I carry 2 phones. 1 AT&T and 1 Verizon. Same model phone.
So comparing the services with them is somewhat valid.

AT&T GSM sucks. I cannot stress strongly enough that
anyone even considering AT&T GSM, get a phone that will also
do 800 TDMA and/or analog. Their GSM coverage is horrible.
Verizon isn't 100%, but it is certainly vastly superior coverage wise.

GSM works well when it has coverage and I have few complaints
about call quality, until you hit the edge, which you do often.

Throw in 1x and the scales tip even further to Verizon.

    Richard,
I am saddened to see the deterioration of the AT&T TDMA network in metro
Denver, but thought rural roaming was still working well with service
provided by roaming carriers. Not so.

I read in other forums of all-circuits-busy on Cellular One for AT&T
customers, and this past weekend I was receiving only analog on my AT&T
TDMA phone while roaming on Union Cellular. This is a big deal for
those AT&T users who got GSM/TDMA phones (with no analog). They were
hoping to get the best of both digital worlds, but now get nothing.

So even the Multi-network phones aren't the answer.
