The signal needs to be sent to your phone when you check your voicemail, so
dial back into your voicemail box.

When there, be sure to review your most recent message(s).

You must allow the system to log you off, so press the * key until the
    system disconnects the call.

If your icon does not disappear in a few seconds, then your phone is not
    recieving the signal.

I would further ask if you have a strong signal when you do check your
    voicemail.

I believe you have an option to remove the new message icon manually.

This is my theory, so please test only if the above procedure did not work:

    1. Navigate to your "Messages" menu.

    2. Navigate to an option to "Erase Msg".

    3. Select the option for "Voice" or "All Messages".

Please respond back and let me know how it goes with you!

If none of that helps, call Verizon CS and have them clear your voicemail.
I have had the same problem before.

Whenever this happened to me in the past, I found the easiest way to clear
it was to leave myself a voice message (from a landline or other phone.) I
would then retrieve my message and delete it from my cell phone.

I am so glad the LG VX8100 that I now have, has a "clear voice mail
    indicator" function.

Just a thought. On some phones the text message icon is very similar
to the voicemail icon. Could it be that you have an unread text
    message?
