LG VX4400B and v10

Discussion in 'alt.cellular.verizon' started by Mark W. McClure, Dec 10, 2003.

  1. I have a new VX4400B that I got as an upgrade of my existing account and NEW
    EVERY TWO credit.

My attempts to use GetItNow have been absolutely fruitless, so far. When I try
to use it, I get a message saying "CONNECTING..." which then times out and asks
me to try again later. My wife's phone which is also a 4400B (upgraded from a
StarTAC 7868, just like me) doesn't work either.

Both phones are v10 of the software and two conversations with tech support and
two with data services have yet to resolve the issue.

I have seen several posts here in this group that GIN uses 1X starting with v10
but no one has said that it REQUIRES 1X. Neither of my accounts have National
Access MOU coded on them (1Xpp1). I've checked the new contract summary they
handed me and the VZServe website to be sure; no National Access, no Express
    Network.

Am I going to have to convince someone that National Access *is* required or do
I have the same problem with both phones.

Yes, v10 absolutely, positively requires ExpressNetwork for GIN and Web as it uses
1x exclusively. Tell the tech to turn the feature on as a test and you will see that it
    works.

I'm not sure if it is REQUIRED...but I personally think the GIN/MW
programming in v10 could have problems if NA MOU is not added. Note:
Outside of VZW networks, roaming on Alltel, I have seen MW use the
non-1X CSD network (the same one that carries QNC).

If it were me, I'd yell, scream and otherwise get them to do it. It
    can't hurt.

    Mark:

As one that has the V10 and had/did not have the code added for
National Access-MOU I can tell you that having it added made the
connection worse. Before the (firmware upgrade or adding on NA-MOU I
cannot tell which) GIN and Mobile Web fired right up and I did not
know at what speed. Please understand that the 1x indicator does not
mean you are connecting at 1x but that you are in that area of 1x
    service.

Now before I had NA-MOU added and with the new firmware, I was not
seeing a little bent arrow (QNC Data Active) and Mobile web and GIN
worked just fine. The I had the NA-MOU added on and the difference was
two little arrows flashing in the screen, then it would jump down to
the bent arrow. But the connection was much slower and on GIN I had to
click three screens to even get to the menu and before it was one
click to get the needed menu.

There is either a problem with the V10 firmware update or with the
National Access-MOU codes that are on the system. In your case since
the NA-MOU has not been added I would say the firmware upgrade is
    faulty.

  5. I have never seen a connection to GIN work. Just times out. I CAN use the
WAPTunnel with no problem and I CAN use QNC with a USB cable from my laptop.
    GIN is stone-cold broken.

I'm wondering if the difference is that my units came with v10 from the factory
(the folks at the store thought it was v08). All of the components inside were
factory-taped and factory sealed so I'm pretty sure the local techs never saw
    it.

I'm going to whine at them today but I don't feel as strong about it now that I
hear other people with v10 are able to use GIN without NA-MOU.

This doesn't sound like normal behavior. On my v10 with NA MOU on the
account, the arrows never kick to the "bent arrow", which is a sign
that the phone is now using the QNC/CSD network for MW/GIN (you try
saying THAT five times fast!). It sounds like your 4400 is trying and
failing to use the NA/1X network, so is trying to drop down to CSD.
Again, something wrong with the phone or the v10 update. My phone has
never tried to do this, and always accesses GIN and MW via 1X.

I'm wondering if some stores/techs have a faulty copy of the v10
update in their computers? Is this even possible? I got mine at the
VZW store in Akron, OH (Fairlawn, suburb) and it works great. Maybe
if everyone went to Akron... :D

    Hi Mike:

The QNC Data Active was the connect for GIN and MW prior to my having the
1xpp1 added to the account as a feature. I have since had it removed this
morning and I am now connecting quickly again. So it is the code for
National Access-MOU that is causing the delay. As far as I can tell.

Ack. I have the same problem.

If anyone is curious, you can view what happens in a video that I recorded

Yeah, it's pretty clear from the video that it's happening that way.
But it's not SUPPOSED to happen that way, at all. It looks like the
handset is trying, and failing, to route GIN over 1X, so it falls back
    to CSD.

On my v10 with 1X data, it just connects with the arrows.

And removing NA MOU must work, because it will not try to access the
1X network and will just default to CSD.

I wish someone would figure out what's going on here. Maybe it's
different in different parts of the country? But that wouldn't
explain my flawless use of MW/GIN over 1X in areas from Ohio to
    California this past week.

    Mike

  10. My situation was finally solved by getting the right tech configure the right
thing on my account. It had to do with switching from an older handset to the
4400. NA-MOU (1xpp1) is not required in order to do GIN with v10 of the 4400
software. Once they made the account change, it works fine on both phones.

I'm confused - did you remove or add NA MOU? Is GIN working over 1X
or QNC, and how about Mobile Web?

    Mike

  12. I never had NA-MOU because they would never give it to me. It was never added
nor removed because it was never there. The tech claimed he made some account
    change and it started working.

I wish they had added NA-MOU so I could use the tether web where broadband
    isn't currently available.

GIN appears to be working over QNC and I can make QNC connections to the
Internet and have done that since day one. I don't subscribe to Verizon Mobile
web but my WapTunnel hack worked before and still works now.

Oh, OK, I get it. When you said someone "did something" to your
account, I thought it involved NA.

I'm glad you got it cleared up.
