LG VX6100 Alarm Clock

I've had the 6100 for a couple of months and just noticed something about
the alarm clock(s). They don't work unless the phone is on. My previous
phones, which were super-basic Nokia models would ring the alarm clock if
the phone was off. I learned this when trying to use my phone as an alarm
clock recently. If the phone is off and an alarm is set, the alarm is
ignored. I have to leave the phone on, and risk being jarred awake by a
phone call if I need the alarm. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I tried leaving the phone on and setting the ringer to vibrate, but that
just causes the alarm clock to vibrate when it it time, hardly much good
    while I'm asleep.

The manual for the phone is little more than a paper copy of the menues
displayed on the phone. Can anyone help me get the phone to be a useful
    alarm clock?
