How-to Motorola Moto E5 Play: Clear App Data/Cache; Wipe the Cache Partition; Reboot to Safe Mode

    Clear an App’s Cache/Data:

    NOTE: If one of your apps crashes, freezes, takes up too much storage inexplicably or otherwise doesn’t work as intended, you can try solving these issues by clearing the app’s cache or data.

    WARNING! When you clear an app’s data, all your personal data stored within the app will be deleted, including user profiles, credit card and login information, save files, settings etc. To avoid losing personal app data, clear ONLY the app’s cache.

    1. Open “Settings
    2. Go to “Apps” and switch to “All apps” if necessary
    3. Select the desired app
    4. Access “Storage
    5. Tap “Clear cache
    6. If clearing the app’s cache didn’t help, tap “Clear data” > “OK” (check the WARNING above)

    Clear the Phone’s Cache Partition:

    NOTE: If you experience issues with your phone and you’re considering factory resetting it, alternatively you can try solving the problems by clearing the phone’s cache partition. This can have results similar to a factory reset without losing any personal data from the device storage.

    1. Turn the phone off if necessary
    2. Press and hold “Volume Down” and “Power” at the same time
    3. At the “Boot Mode Selection” screen, release the buttons
    4. Press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Recovery
    5. Press “Volume Up” to select the highlighted option
    6. When prompted with the “No Command” screen, press and release “Power” and “Volume Up” repeatedly until you gain access to Recovery
    7. Once in Android Recovery, you can navigate the menu by pressing “Volume down”. Highlight “Wipe Cache Partition
    8. Press “Power” to select the option
    9. Once the process completes, highlight “Reboot system now” and press “Power” to confirm

    NOTE: If clearing the cache partition didn’t help, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to factory reset the device instead.

    Reboot to Safe Mode and Uninstall an App:

    NOTE: In case a third-party app causes problems and prevents you from removing it, you should be able to uninstall the app while in Safe Mode. In this mode, all third-party apps are disabled by default.

    1. Press and hold “Power” on the home screen
    2. From the Power Management pop-up, tap and hold “Power Off
    3. When prompted to “Reboot to Safe Mode” tap “OK” and wait for the phone to reboot. Once it finishes, it should show a Safe Mode watermark in the lower area of the home screen
    4. To remove an app, first open “Settings
    5. Then go to “Apps” and switch to “All apps” if necessary
    6. Select the desired app and tap “Uninstall” > “OK
    7. Once the app has been removed, exit Safe Mode by rebooting the device as you would do normally
