How-to Motorola Moto G6: Clear App Cache/Data; Wipe the Cache Partition; Reboot to Safe Mode

    Clear an App’s Data/Cache:

    NOTE: If one of your apps freezes, crashes, takes up too much storage inexplicably or doesn’t work as intended, you can attempt to fix these problems by clearing the app’s cache/data.

    WARNING! When you clear an app’s data, all your personal data stored in the app will be deleted. This includes login information, user profiles, save files, personalized settings etc. To avoid losing this data, clear ONLY the app’s cache.

    1. Open “Settings” and access “Apps
    2. Go to “All apps” if necessary
    3. Tap the desired app and access “Storage
    4. Tap “Clear cache
    5. If clearing the app’s cache didn’t help, tap “Clear data” > “OK” (read the WARNING above)

    Clear the Phone’s Cache Partition:

    NOTE: If your phone doesn’t work as intended and you are considering factory resetting it, alternatively you can try fixing these issues by clearing the phone’s cache partition. This can have results similar to a factory reset without losing any personal data from the device.

    1. Turn the phone off if necessary
    2. Press and hold “Power” and “Volume Down” simultaneously
    3. At the “Boot Mode Selection” screen, release the buttons
    4. Press “Volume Down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Recovery
    5. Press “Volume Up” to select the highlighted option
    6. At the “No Command” prompt, press and release “Power” and “Volume Up” repeatedly to gain access to Recovery
    7. Once in Android Recovery, press “Volume down” to navigate the menu and highlight “Wipe cache partition
    8. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
    9. Once done, ensure “Reboot system now” is highlighted and press “Power

    NOTE: if clearing the cache partition didn’t solve the issues, you can check this thread for a guide on how to factory reset the phone instead.

    Reboot to Safe Mode and Remove an App:

    NOTE: If a third-party app causes issues and prevents you from removing it, you should be able to uninstall the app while in Safe Mode, where all third-party apps are disabled by default.

    1. Press and hold “Power” on the home screen
    2. Tap and hold “Power Off” from the Power Management pop-up
    3. At the “Reboot to Safe Mode” prompt, tap “OK” and wait for the device to reboot. Once done it should show a “Safe Mode” watermark in the lower area of the home screen
    4. Next open “Settings” and go to “Apps
    5. If necessary, switch to “All apps
    6. Select the desired app and tap “Uninstall” > “OK
    7. You can now exit Safe Mode by rebooting your phone normally
