How-to Motorola Moto G6 Play: Clear App Cache/Data; Wipe the Cache Partition; Boot to Safe Mode

    Clear an App’s Data/Cache:

    NOTE: If one of your applications crashes, freezes, takes up too much storage inexplicably or otherwise doesn’t work as intended, you can attempt to fix these issues by clearing the app’s cache/data.

    WARNING! When you clear an app’s data, all your personal data stored within the app will be deleted, including login information, user profiles, save files, personalized settings etc. To avoid losing personal app data, clear only the app’s cache.

    1. Launch “Settings
    2. Go to “Apps
    3. Access “All apps
    4. Select the desired app and go to “Storage
    5. Tap “Clear cache
    6. If clearing the cache didn’t solve the issue, tap “Clear data” > “OK” (read the WARNING above)

    Clear the Phone’s Cache Partition:

    NOTE: If your phone doesn’t work as intended and you’re considering a factory reset, alternatively you can try solving these issues by clearing the phone’s cache partition. This can have results similar to a factory reset without losing personal data on the phone.

    1. If necessary, turn the phone off
    2. Then press and hold “Power” and “Volume Down” at the same time
    3. At the “Boot Mode Selection” screen, release the buttons
    4. Press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Recovery
    5. Press “Volume Up” to select the option
    6. At the “No Command” screen press and release “Volume Up” and “Power” repeatedly
    7. Once you’re in the Recovery menu, press “Volume down” to navigate the menu and highlight “Wipe cache partition
    8. Press “Power” to select the option
    9. Ensure “Reboot system now” is highlighted and press “Power

    NOTE: If clearing the cache partition didn’t solve the issues, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to factory reset the device instead.

    Reboot to Safe Mode and Uninstall an App:

    NOTE: if a third-party app causes issues and prevents you from uninstalling it, you should be able to remove the app while in Safe Mode, where all third-party apps are disabled by default.

    1. Press and hold “Power” on the home screen
    2. Tap and hold “Power off” in the Power Management pop-up
    3. When prompted to “Reboot to Safe Mode” tap “OK”. Once the device reboots, you should see a “Safe Mode” watermark in the lower area of the home screen
    4. To remove an app, first open “Settings
    5. Go to “Apps” and switch to “All apps” if necessary
    6. Select the desired app
    7. Tap “Uninstall” > “OK
    8. To exit Safe Mode, reboot the phone as you would normally do
