Ditto. Echoes my experience with being suckered into a Radio Shack/Sprint
    phone deal.
Was told about the 14-day no obligation trial--cancel within that period,
and owe nothing more than the $39 setup charge.
Got the phone home, found out it didn't have any service. Also found out on
major interstates there were dead zones every 2 miles. Returned the phone
and Sprint's story changed. Now they wanted over $70 from me--the first
month's ENTIRE bill, for a few trial day's use.
Sprint CSRs are liars. They've got a scam running and I filed a complaint
with the AG over that little caper 2 years ago.
I tried Verizon next, and found the phone was in roam mode at my house.
Then Cingular... no service at the house...
Then finally Nextel. Good strong signal at the house and 100% reliable on
    the interstate highway.
During the blackout, our local cell site lost power and didn't come back for
four days. I wrote a letter to Nextel's CEO. I got a response within a week
from their freq coordinator and a full explanation of why the site was down
(air conditioner stopped, while the batteries kept the cell running--but the
August heat caused an autotune combiner to melt down and a new one had to be
    shipped the following Monday).
Few companies are honest when the rubber hits the pavement, but I was
delighted at the friendly and courteous response I got from the Nextel
    technical people.
No company is perfect, but at Nextel, I don't see an overtly-corrupt
attitude. They make an effort to get things right, and 99.9% of the time, my
service is excellent. I use my i90c a lot, and lately, I can't recall any
incident where a call dropped or signal wasn't good enough for a solid
    connection.
AVOID Sprint, above all cellular companies. I have a feeling they haven't
changed their tune since April 2002.

Yes, Sprint is as bad as that. While the poster lacked the elocution style
of Emily Post, the point does ring true. I'm a former victim of Sprint's
revenue generating scam with 14-day trials and my attorney started
litigation against them some time ago. I can't discuss details, but
something significant will come from the justice system to put the kaybosh
on Sprint's illegal and fraudulent sign up scam.

six years ago sprint pcs was still good. i was able to buy a phone online
and return it 2-3 days later and pay only for the airtime only. i even got
to speak with a person and not a pre-recorded machine. two years ago i
attempted to buy another sprint pcs phone from circuit city, free after
rebate. i brought it home to find out there was absolutely no coverage where
i live. brought it into a sprintpcs store and they claimed the software was
old and they upgraded it. when i got home, i had the same problem. this
wasnt very reliable so i returned it back to circuit city with no problems
luckily. sorry to hear that you had to go thru all that troubles.

I understand the complaints. I have phones with Verizon and Sprint. I
do get better coverage with Verizon in NY, especially in subways and
other challenging areas. That said, coverage with Sprint is not bad at
all. There are times when the bars seem to go down to zero and
suddenly reappear but it happens rarely. Coverage is acceptable even
though not as good as Verizon.

That said, Sprint's phones are much more progressive than Verizon's
and the Treo600 kicks anything Verizon has to offer. My experience
with Samsung products on both platform is much, much less than
    stellar.

There is something of a trade off here. Customer service can range
depending upon the individual you speak to and is not representative
of the company. Verizon is currently dealing with the SmartPhone
fiasco. Sprint has its issues and I left them many years ago because
of a problem I had that wasn't fixed. Still, I'd think some of this
    the anomalous right now.

I don't have a GSM phone but I'm told those are of questionable use
    out of the main city.

Unless you have a GAIT phone that also does TDMA and Analog. AT&T and
Cingular each usually have a couple of those for sale.

GAIT phones, TDMA and/or GSM will not work on Verizon's or Sprint's network.

    Agreed.

I signed a one year contract with Sprint.
After a year and a half I cancelled and went to Verizon because Sprint
    coverage sucks.
They sent me a bill for $150 for a early cancellation charge.
I phoned, they promised to fix it. I phoned, they promised, I
    phoned, they promised. , etc.
the bill was up to $190 when I sen mail to
    The Better Business Bureau
    Washington attorney General,
    Both my Senators and Representatives.
    The telecommunication watchdog group.,
    the Feeral communication Committee.

I started getting letters from Sprint.
"Oh, we are so sorry, etc."

    NO more bills.

I would eat broken glass before I deal with Sprint. Ever.

AMPS will but, why would you purchase a GAIT phone ( which is marketed for
Cingular's network and not SprintPCS's network ) for either Verizon's or
Sprint Network if you are going to use in AMPS ( analog ) mode all the time?

And why are posting this to multiple newsgroups? :)
If you want to make calls, using another carriers network ( roaming ), you
need to make sure that your SprintPCS phone can do
1900Mhz & 850Mhz CDMA and for the really fringe areas, AMPS .
Why bring it up on either of these newsgroups?

It does suck that the original poster had to go through all of this though.
With the exception of the original two A/B carriers, the new guys will be
playing catch-up as far as coverage goes for a while and thus, everybody is
going to be different as to which carrier will work for them?

When you try out a phone, don't wait until the trial period expires to
really give it a good run though/drive test.
Shouldn't take more than a week to decide if it's going to work for you or
    not.

    Anyway, my .02 ;-)

It's not that it wouldn't work but, why would you want to relegate a GAIT
phone to becoming a analog only phone at that point?
Kind of academic anyway, since SprintPCS will not have that phone in the
system therefore, it will not be able to be activated on SprintPCS network
anyway. If it's not a SprintPCS phone, it's a show stopper at that point.

Boy am I glad that I'm with T-Mobile. I've had their service for

I have never had a bad time with them. I've had phones break and was

No complaints...had a friend that work with Sprint, he quit because of
