How-to Samsung Galaxy Note 7: Back Up & Restore App Data, Contacts, and Media Files

    Back Up Settings & Application Data:

    1. Open the apps drawer
    2. Launch “Settings
    3. Tap “Cloud and accounts” > “Backup & reset
    4. Enable “Back up my data” to back up Wi-Fi passwords, account data, and other settings to your Google account
    5. Enable “Automatic restore” to restore app data automatically when reinstalling apps

    NOTE: To restore app data, settings, Wi-Fi passwords etc. you can choose to do so the next time you sign in with the Google backup account.

    Back Up Contacts on an Account:

    1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
    2. Open “Settings
    3. Tap “Cloud and accounts” and select the account you want to use for the backup
    4. Tap “More” > “Sync now

    NOTE: You can restore contacts backed up using this method the next time you sign in with your Google backup account on the phone.

    Back Up Contacts To the SD Card:

    1. Open “Apps
    2. Go to “Contacts
    3. Tap “Menu” > “Settings
    4. Optionally, tap “Contacts to display” > “All contacts
    5. Choose to “Import / Export contacts
    6. Tap “Import to SD card” and name the backup file if necessary
    7. Tap “OK

    Restore Contacts from SD Card:

    1. Launch “Contacts
    2. Tap “Menu” > “Settings
    3. If necessary, tap “Contacts to display” and select “All contacts
    4. Tap “Import / Export contacts
    5. Select to “Import from SD card
    6. Review the file name and tap “OK” to confirm

    Back Up Media Files Using the Phone:

    1. Launch “My Files
    2. Tap “My Device” > “Menu
    3. Tap “Share” and select the desired content
    4. Select the desired backup location and wait for the process to complete

    Restore Media Files Using the Phone:

    1. Open the apps drawer
    2. Launch “My Files
    3. Tao “SD card” > “Menu
    4. Tap “Edit” and tick the check boxes associated with the media files you want to restore
    5. Tap “Menu” > “Move” > “My device
    6. Tap “Move here” to move the data to the phone storage
    7. To restore the files into a different location, tap “Create folder” or the folder name and select a different location, then tap “Move here

    Back Up Media Files on a PC or Mac:

    1. Open the Internet browser on the computer
    2. Visit Samsung Smart Switch™
    3. Download and install Samsung Smart Switch for your type of computer (PC or Mac)
    4. Connect the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to your computer via USB
    5. Enable “Media Device (MTP)” / “File Transfer (MTP)” when prompted or from the “Notification” area
    6. Allow the computer to install any required drivers, if necessary
    7. Open Samsung Smart Switch on the computer and allow it to connect with the phone
    8. Open the File Explorer / File Finder on the computer
    9. Navigate to the desired media files on your phone and copy them
    10. Transfer the files in the desired backup location on the computer
    11. Once done, eject the phone storage by dragging and dropping its virtual drive from the desktop and into the “Trash can” (Mac), or via system tray (PC)
    12. You can now safely disconnect the phone from the USB cord

    NOTE: To restore media files from a Mac or Windows PC, follow the exact same steps above except, when it comes to transferring files, transfer the backup files from the computer storage back to the phone storage to restore them.
