How-to Samsung Galaxy Note 8: Back Up App Data, Contacts and Media Files

    Back Up App Data:

    1. Launch “Settings
    2. Scroll to and tap “Cloud and accounts
    3. Tap “Backup & restore
    4. Enable “Back up my data” to back up app data, contacts, and passwords to your backup account
    5. Enable “Automatic Restore” to allow app data, settings, and passwords when reinstalling apps

    Back Up Contacts:

    1. Open “Settings
    2. Tap “Cloud and accounts
    3. Go to “Accounts
    4. Select the account you want to use for contact syncing
    5. Tap “Menu” > “Sync Now

    Back Up Contacts to SD Storage:

    1. Launch “Contacts
    2. Tap “Menu” > “Settings
    3. If necessary, tap “Contacts to display” and select “All contacts
    4. Tap “Import/Export contacts
    5. Tap “Export to SD card” > “OK” to confirm

    Back Up Media Files on the Phone Storage:

    1. Open “My Files
    2. Tap “Internal storage
    3. Tap “Menu” > “Share
    4. Select the contact you want to back up
    5. Tap “Share” again and select the desired backup location

    Back Up Media Files on a Windows PC:

    1. Connect the Samsung phone to your computer via USB
    2. Enable “Media device” / “File transfer” when prompted or from the “Notification” area
    3. Open the File Explorer on the computer and locate the media files on the phone storage
    4. Transfer the files in the desired backup location on the computer
    5. Once the transfer is done, eject the phone storage via system tray and safely disconnect the device from the USB port

    Back Up Media Files on a Mac Computer:

    NOTE: Skip the first 3 steps below if Samsung Kies is already installed on the Mac.

    1. Launch the Internet browser on the Mac
    2. Visit http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/app/kies
    3. Click “Download for Mac” and install Kies on the computer
    4. Connect the Samsung phone to your computer via USB
    5. Enable “File Transfer” / “Media device” when prompted or from the “Notification” area
    6. Open Kies on the Mac and access “Back up / Restore
    7. Go to the “Backup” tab
    8. Tick the check box associated with “Photos”, “Music” and other media file types you want to back up
    9. Click “Backup” to start the process
    10. After the process is done, eject the phone storage by dragging the virtual drive from the desktop and dropping it over the “Trash can
    11. You can safely disconnect the phone from the USB port
