    Using a Google Account:

NOTE: Using a Google account you can sync the contacts stored on your older Samsung device, allowing you to then re-sync the account data with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

    1. Open “Contacts” on the Note 3 / S4
    2. Access the “Contacts” tab if necessary
    3. Tap “Menu” > “Merge accounts
    4. Select “Merge with Google” and tap “OK” to confirm
    5. If required, follow the on-screen instructions to sign in with your Google account
    6. Switch to the Note 5 and register the same account. Allow the account to sync contacts with your phone and you’re all set

Using the “Contacts” app and the “Import / Export” Option:

NOTE: You can use the “Contacts” app on the older Samsung devices in order to export your contacts as a vCard file. You can then transfer the file, and import it on the Note 5 using the same default application.

    1. Open “Contacts” on the Note 3 / S4
    2. Go to the “Contacts” tab
    3. Press “Menu” > “Contacts to display” > “All contacts
    4. Tap “Menu” > “Import / Export” and select to “Export to SD Card” (remember the file name for future use)
    5. Tap “OK” to confirm
    6. Open the email client, compose a new email, and attach the vCard file to it
    7. Send the email to your own address, and switch to the Galaxy Note 5
    8. On the Note 5, open the email and download the attached file
    9. Use the “Import” option within the “Contacts” app’s menu to add the vCard file’s contents to your phonebook

NOTE: Alternatively, once you have created the vCard on the Note 3 / S4, you can connect your phones to your computer via USB, and manually transfer the vCard file to the Note 5’s memory. Then use the same method above to import the file’s contents via “Contacts”

    Using “Smart Switch”:

NOTE: Smart Switch is an official app from Samsung which can be used to transfer contacts and other data from one phone to another.

    1. Go to the Google Play Store and install the official “Smart Switch” app on your phones
    2. Launch the application on both terminals and select “Android device
    3. On the Note 3 / S4, select “Sending device
    4. Select “Receiving device” on the Note 5
    5. On the sending device, tap “Connect
    6. Select “Contacts” > “Send
    7. On the Note 5, tap “OK” to accept the transfer

NOTE: Make sure you keep both smartphones in close proximity to each other while using this method.

    Via “Send Anywhere”:

NOTE: Send Anywhere is a third party application that uses a P2P connection to transfer contacts and other types of files without the need of a computer.

    1. Install “Send Anywhere” on your Samsung devices via the Play Store
    2. Launch the app on both terminals
    3. Tap “Send” > “Contacts” on the Note 3 / S4
    4. Select the contacts you want to share and tap “Send
    5. Choose a transfer method. Tapping “Generate QR Code” on the sending device allows you to start the transfer by scanning the code with the Note 5’s camera. You can also tap “Receive” on the Note 5 and manually enter the transfer code from the sending device

As I know, three ways can be used to Transfer Contacts from a Galaxy Note 3 / SGS4 to a Samsung Galaxy Note 5. They are Google account, Samsung Switch, Mobile Phone Transfer. You can have a try and choose the one you like best.
