The other day I received a text message seemingly from Verizon advising me
there was a new free digital software update available for my phone by
    dialing *228.

I have the National One Rate plan with a Motorola V60c phone.

    Should I run this update?

    Thanks.

If you travel in Northern California, Eastern Washington, Eastern
Orgegon, or Northern West Virginia, I would hold on the update until it
is found out if Verizon did actually lose America's Choice Coverage area
    in those locations.

  3. Yes. Do it
*228 is *ACT or short for activation.
Press Option 1 (Program the phone) and then check the details.
Switch off the phone and swich it back on

Then Press *228 again and select Option 2 (Roaming Update).
For a 2nd time Switch off the phone and swich it back on

    You are done.

    Sincerely,
    R Randhawa

When I press *228 on my Audiovox 9500 it does not ask for any options. It
goes straight to the update process, after which it says "Programming
    Failed". What am I missing?

Nothing. If the phone has never been programmed (just taken out of the box)
or if you have changed phone numbers, moved, etc, choose #1. If you are just
    updating the PRL, option #2.

But when do I enter the #1 or #2? It doesn't seem to give me the chance.
Do I just enter it all as one string, i.e. *228#2 ? I never get any
    prompting for any options.
