Does anyone have any experiance with Verizon coverage in Dallas / Plano /
Richardson TX? My Sprint PCS phone is headed for the trash can in a couple
of days. I am looking for solid coverage. Also what is the best phone to
use for the best signal on their network?

I do not know about Dallas but Houston sucks with Verizon. Dropped calls all
over the place and garbled voice when you do make a connection. Both my
daughter and son-in-law went to Sprint about a month ago and have been happy
ever since. I the WI area Verizon is OK where they are Verizon, but that is
such a small area that you are roaming in most of the state and that seems
    to work fine for me.

I've driven around the area using a 7868 with Verizon and never had a
problem. This year (I'm there the first weekend every March) I'll see
    how a V60P works there.

    Mark,
Sprint and Verizon have a lot in common across the Metroplex, they both use
PCS frequencies. That isn't bad in of itself, but you will only get better
service if Verizon has cell sites located closer to where you
live/work/travel. You might also consider Cingular and AT&T. Both are
going through a technology conversion, and Cingular's is going better.

    Use your tryout period wisely.

Yep, Sprint has their cell tower map online - they only have 1 tower in my
home city of Murphy and it's always dropping calls. Do any of the other
    carrers post their tower maps?

Ya, I got my Sprint phones while I lived in Houston and I agree, however
they are next to worthless up here.

I don't think they have cell tower maps online but the fcc has some data.

These are the ones that they had to file with the FCC
These don't enclude the ones that they put on buildings
    or pre existing towers.
It also dosn't inculde the PCS band towers.

Now it is starting to look kinda obvious who
will provide the best cellular coverage.

The only factor is if cingular is also using
ATT's towers, when they often do.
Or if cingular is mainly puting thier eqipment on
    other pre existing stuctures.
That is something that you will have to find out.

Just take an old analog phone that you can get
from the junk shop for $2 and drive around to
see where they two companys have signal.
    Simple as that.
The signal you get when the phone is on is
the same as you would have when in a call
If you have solid coverage acording to that
meter, then a new phone should work there also.
It dosn't have to be activated, all it does is
    monitor the AMPs pilot channel.

    I did a search in the FCC's ASR(antenna structure registration)database.
(Why didn't I think off that before?????)
And found that the majority of the antennas for cigular and
ATT are on structures that don't classify as towers.
So I didn't find them in my previous search.
And just in Dallas, there is too many of them for me to list.

Most of them are on a structure classified as
"Structure Type POLE - Any type of Pole "
So that means that they are probably on utility poles.
ATT looks like they have a moderate bit more, but
both companies have saturated the area.

    More info.
I counted the number of currently constructed sites.
here is what I counted for sites in the city of Dallas.

    ATT wireless
    42 sites

    cingular
    19 sites

    Sprint
    4 sites

    verizon
    1 site???????

T mobile has been grated permits for 14 sites.
None of them has been constructed yet.

I think the 1900 MHz carriers have different reporting rules/areas.
Sprint obviously is (1900 CDMA), and I do believe VZW is on 1900 in
the DFW area. AT&T and Cingular are their 800 MHz TDMA sites.

ATT is the one with 1.9Ghz GSM and 800Mhz TDMA/AMPS.
The GSM only map is pretty sick looking.
That is why they still sell TDMA plans in the Texas market.

Cingular already has their 800Mhz GSM built out in in Texas.
Cingular is currently running AMPS/TDMA/GSM on their 800Mhz band.
The coverage quality you get with all three modes should be
    about the same.
