I've followed the instructions for "free" web access via public proxies
and it generally seems to work pretty well. I'm just wondering if
anyone has some insight on how it is that VZW doesn't charge for this.
They must know that this is not an ordinary phone call connection right?
Or do they just not care?

Probably such a small volume it does not matter.

Unfortunately all I can tell you is to look on the howardforums website.
I think the exact steps depend on your phone model-- mine is an LG
VX6100. I'd give you a link, but for reasons unknown to me, my IP has
been banned from those forums on account of an "iPod link" even though I
never posted such a thing. :( They don't even give an address to let
me acquit myself. Anyway, search around for the FAQs for your phone model.

you are using 'call plan' minutes .. why should they care which way you
    spend them.

GO over your plan's minutes and see how big your service bill will be
35 or 40 cents PER minute
